About the only thing in common with The Great Gatsby was the sweetness of the narrator.

Great book. F. Scott Fitzgerald's inspiration for A Great Gatsby.

Cather is a classic, for sure. This isn't her best, though. It's very short, so it's an easy read, but it's also too short to feel very fleshed out. Still, Cather has a great way with words!

I've read a couple of Willa Cather's before and had liked them enough to want to look out for more. This didn't disappoint - I don't need a real plot when the writing's so good - I could see her, the boys and the captain so clearly and I loved the device of being told the story from Neils' point of view - young boy not able to understand exactly what it was all about...

I found this book to be a bit thin. I think Cather got a bit cranky in her old age and began to aggrandize frontiersmen at the expense of historical accuracy.

A well written book about the rise and fall of the wife of a railway tycoon in the American mid-west. It charts the change of circumstances and status of the wealthy elite once their fortune disappears. It also tells of the changes in social structure brought about following the depression in America, and finally is a "rite of passage" novel for the central character as he grows up.
