This was an excellent book. I can see why it won a National Book Award. It is so well-written and the tale is so gripping and dramatic that you can easily forget that you are reading history and become as absorbed as you would in a good novel. Yet, it tells an important tale pivotal to understanding the United States' long march toward realizing the ideals of equality espoused in the Constitution.
