A deceptively easy introduction to Pynchon. Also a wonderful exploration of the 60s/70s in the United States which captures an essence available in few other books. A great big little book about paranoia and conspiracy theories gone wild.

Not impressed with the crying of lot 49--Pynchon may be a
master of satire & puns, but his settings and characterizations lack
something. People talk and you have no idea who they are or where
they came from. There will be a conversation in progress for pages
and then you discover that they're on a yacht with a bunch of
anarchists who have stolen the boat from the rightful owner, some
gangland mafioso dude....whatever. I have to know WHERE people are
and WHO people...
