Didn’t Like It

This was a book that I could not finish. I gave up less than halfway through. Reviewed by the NY Times as a "Blisteringly funny police procedural" it was neither funny nor was there any police procedure in it up to page 180 (which is where I stopped reading.) A huge disappointment.

Involving characters, had to finish the set, even if I went backwards

Wambaugh is still one of the premier writers of police tales.

He's back and with a vengence. Having started in law enforcement in 1975, this was about the same time Joe started writing and having his books made into movies (which were never as good as his books). He was an author of the times and then he wrote The Blooding and Fire Lover and went away from what he did best - cop fiction. With this book he re-establishes himself as the ultimate police fiction writer. It was worth the wait for Joe to return to what he does best. I can't imagine that the generation Y'ers and X'ers will be able to realte to his writing and humor. Joe is an accquired taste but oh once you get it you only want more.

Fun book to read, especially being in law enforcement. Not a literary masterpiece, but an entertaning book. Fun book to read, especially being in law enforcement. Not a literary masterpiece, but an entertaning book.

This is the first Wambaugh book that I have read. Now, I see why crime entusiasts call him the master. This is a riveting, suspenseful, yet equally funny crime story that takes place in the heart of Hollywood. HIGHLY recommended to crime fiction and Wambaugh fans.

Funny and surprisingly real. It's good to have Wambaugh back. There's a lot of grit to this novel but it's also packed with rich dark humor.

Funny book. My dad gave it to me, he's a cop, and he says that it's really realistic. I liked it, but I also think there are things I don't want to know about police life, just like there are things people shouldn't know about teacher life.
