“Kind of like how humans rose out of the primordial ooze, this book is like primordial ooze for Science Fiction. I found this in my Great Uncle's house, which is interesting, because he lives in the DC area and was a Naval Engineer all his life (a group which apparently devoured these books). However, this book doesn't make the leap from those days to the current ones very well, and there are several reasons for this: 1) This book was written at a time when Eugenics was in vogue, so it was faintly disturbing on that end; 2) The characters are so macho that I almost want to show up and give them Macho Merit Badges just to honor their macho-ness; 3) The dialogue sucks, but is interesting for its snapshot of then-current lingo; 4) and he spends so much damn time developing the technology, I could understand why only an engineer could love this book. However, like I kind of hinted at in point 3, this book didn't develop in a vacuum, and if you consider this to be the beginning of the "space opera" genre, you can see how things evolved from here... So, just for that reason I'm glad I read most of it... I stopped at the last chapter, I just couldn't stand it anymore.”
