With a gunman's past he isn't proud of, Jared Dunn is living in New York and is a partner in an established law firm when he hears that his untrustworthy stepbrother Andrew has invited a "distant cousin" (Noelle, a 19-year-old girl) to move into the home Andrew shares with their grandmother. Not trusting Andrew at all, Jared feels this is a good time for him to move back to Fort Worth to keep an eye on what's happening, especially where he's the one who pays the bills there. Once he sets up his new practice it doesn't take long to become successful, and cases begin coming to him. However, one involving a black man could get him easily killed, or the man lynched. Also, Noelle becomes a thorn in his side. Jared just knows she is attracted to Andrew, but the feelings Jared gets about her are far from proper for a 36-year-old man to be feeling for a woman of her age. Besides, she acts scandalously in many ways, is outspoken - and he finds that she has a passionate nature that threatens to ruin her plans with Andrew.

When Andrew and Noelle are caught in a compromising situation, Andrew doesn't want to marry her - she isn't "of society", after all. It turns out that Jared's offer of marriage works, but what will become of their future when he has so many secrets - and doesn't love her?
