One day by the river, while watching her tiresome baby brother Wentworth, Tiffany is surprised by the sudden appearance of a gruesome monster and a small boat filled with little blue men. Thanks to their warnings, she’s able to mount a rescue. But that’s just the beginning of some strange adventures in the Chalk, Tiffany’s home. The blue men begin showing up regularly and when Tiffany’s brother is grabbed by the wicked Queen of Fairyland, it’s up to Tiffany, her frying pan and her allies, the Wee Free Men, to get him back.
This is a Discworld book for YA readers, produced by the inestimable Terry Pratchett. It’s also my first foray into this writer’s weird world and it was a great trip. It’s nice that Tiffany is such a clever, plucky nine year old and that the Nac Mac Feegles (or Wee Free Men or pictsies) are so very entertaining. Also, Pratchett movingly conveys Tiffany’s gradual realization that her much idolized deceased grandmother was in fact a powerful guardian and memorably charts the girl’s own journey to maturity and responsibility. Along the way, there’s lots of fun and interesting imaginative details that will appeal to readers from grade 4 up.
