Cos it’s about an ugly duckling who yearned to belong
“Isador” is the heroine’s name
And this is a story about how she played the love game

I have read a number of her contemporaries, but this is her first historical romance I have tried. While their was some predictability in the plot, the book was well written and kept my attention. I'll definitely check out more of her historical backlist.
This adaptation of classic Ugly Duckling" fairy tale was a charming story of 2 people who had never experienced love, even from family (Isadora Peabody) and never opened a heart to love (Ryan Calhoun) and who never felt that they fit into the society in which they were born and raised. The friendship, trust, respect, and love that grows between these 2 soul mates was touching. Both of them were transformed by their relationship.
The secondary characters added depth and "color" to the story. There was a strong, historically accurate, anti-slave subplot that added another dimension to the book. There were some very funny scenes as well as some very poignant moments here. I am definitely going to check out the sequel, The Horsemaster's Daughter, the story of Ryan's step brother Hunter.”
“cute ugly duckling story. enjoyable and fun.”
