This is one of the first fantasy/romance novels I have read and I must say I enjoyed it quite a bit. Gena Showalter is a great storyteller.

This story takes place in modern day Texas, USA. When Katie James kisses a statue in her backyard and he comes to life, her world is turned upside down. It turns out the ‘statue’ is an alien from another planet. His name is Jorlan and he needs Katie to profess her love for him in order for him to go home.

I loved how Jorlan knew very little about life on earth, and Katie having to show him around. He broke her answering machine because he believed it possessed special powers, and used a spatula as a weapon.

Then Jorlan’s half-brother (who turned him to stone in the first place) shows up to kill Jorlan. It was a really great read and I’m looking forward to reading other books by Gena.

I really enjoyed this book. I liked how it was not the norm of romances. It was a light fun read without all the heavy strings attached. I found the two a well balanced match. I would like to read more on her brothers too. This was my first G.S novel and will not be my last.

I enjoyed this first book by Gena Showalter, with its fresh theme of a warrior imprisioned in stone. As characteristic of her writing, it shows a sweet, goodhearted approach to paranormal romance. The sensuality is well-developed but doesn't overwhelm the romantic aspects of the book. It has many laugh out loud moments, while balancing the heart-tugging moments equally well. Jorlan comes off as being a male chauvinist pig at first, who turns out to be just what self-sufficient tomboy Kate needs. Although he seems just like her macho brothers and father initially, she comes to see that he does respect her strengths and wants a woman who will walk at his side, and not behind him. The villian Percen is actually quite compelling and tortured and scarred in his own right, and you feel sorry for him and hope that there is a way for the book to end where he gets a happy ending too, which does happen. He ends up falling in love with a young woman who can equally meet him on the tortured playing field. I love reading Gena Showalter's books because they have a feel-good appeal to them, which is definitely why I read romances.

It's a light, fun read. Just the book to pick up, after plowing through heavy or emotionally draining ones.

This book was sooo much fun to read! The main character, Katie, has 5 older brothers, is a home repair/reseller, tough as nails and doesn't take crap from any man. Not even a man made of stone..... Jorlan, an alien warrior, cursed to spend over 900 years cast in stone, unable to move but able to hear, see, and feel (!!!) until he is kissed, but then he must have the kisser proclaim their love for him within two weeks or else he turns back to stone forever and ever. These two make such a perfect pair it's funny, sad, and oh so endearing 'til the end of the book. Gena Showalter is one of my now favorite writers ever. 10/10

In Dallas, Katie James runs her business James Real Estate, where she buys old houses, restores and sells them. Her latest purchase is a Victorian house with a garden full with stone statues.
But Katie is amazed that she feels attracted to one of the stone statues, but she is glad that he is not of flesh and blood, considering her experiences with "irritating" men, especially her five older brothers.
But now she has the feeling that she turns nuts, because the statue whispers to her that she must kiss him. So she decided to avoid the garden from now on, but she find it hard to get him out of her mind.
Until she can no longer resist the temptation and kiss him, only to find a real man of flesh and blood in her arms and not a stone one. How strange is that?

The stone warrior is Jorlan en Sarr, a prince from another planet, who was turned into stone by his half-brother and sorcerer Percen de Locke.
Their mother has send Jorlan to earth to protect him from his brother, because Percen will do anything to hurt him. To break the curse, Jorlan must conquer Katie’s heart within 14 day and make sure that she loves him, otherwise he will change in a stone statue for good.
But Jorlan is a very bossy and dominant and defiantly not used to emancipated women, who lives on earth. And Katie has no plans to follow his orders and defiantly have no plans to lose her heart to him.
The only thing she can do, is to help him find a sorcerer who can help him back to his planet.
But then she had not counted on the enormous attraction between the two of them.

This is the first book I have read of Gena Showalter and it is a lovely story full with humour and romance,
Take a dominant, attractive alien man and a strong emancipated woman who is raised with five older brothers, as they fall in love, well I can tell you it will bring a lot of amusing moments.
Like I said earlier, Jorlan is a dominant man who believes that the roles of a woman is to please a man. Katie on the other hand does everything to convince him that men and women are equal.
I’m very curious if her other books, can give me the same pleasure as this one has.

Not my favorite of Gena's books but still fun. It did carry her voice well.
