Orwell draws on his years of experience in India to tell this story of the waning days of British imperialism. A handful of Englishmen living in a settlement in Burma congregate in the European Club, drink whiskey, and argue over an impending order to admit a token Asian.

Burmese Days is about a small group of English officers and timber merchants in Burma during the last years of British imperialism. Although one of the characters, a man named Flory, is sympathetic to the natives and appreciates their culture, the rest of the Englishmen see anything Asian as inferior to British civilization. Orwell's narrative makes it clear that he sees absolutely no redeeming factors in imperialism or in any of the British people who were in Asia.
