“This is the first book by Nabokov that I've read and I am enjoying it very much. It reads like beautifully rendered dream full of symbolism and crisp imagery. the story wound up ending a little strangly but it made sense in the scope of the story, I liked it very much”

A man is jailed for a crime that defies definition. This is the strange tale of the people who visit him in jail and the bizarre happenings therein. So is he actually hung or does the world simply fall apart? This is the brilliant story about the iron fist of the Russian Bolshevist regime, and its psychological implications.”

The entire novel pivots around the expression "gnostical turpitude"--a delicious phrase that show that Cincinnatus knows too much and is therefore culpable. In fact, I use that expression (gnostical turpitude) as a means to cope with the daily bureaucratic $hit that I deal with on a daily basis where I work.
When I recall that Cincinnatus, the main character, in ancient Roman literature, was the one who, while plowing, left it idle to answer the call to serve and save his patria and then, after triumphing, abandoned its power in order to return to his family and continue as provider--when I recall that this Cincinnatus is the one arrested and doomed....
Well, you need to read it to appreciate it like I do.”
“this is quite an easy book to start, but a few chapters in gets somewhat slow. in the end it speeds up a lot though. It is worth reading, but not an absolute must. i enjoyed it quite thoroughly though”

Maybe "INCREDIBLY bizarre but thought-provoking." It's been a while, but I remember ITAB as being more whimsical than THE TRIAL but still retaining quite a lot of dark humor. And what, exactly is "gnostical turpitude"?”
