Even though I really liked the movie, as is often the case, I thought the book was better. The story is very engaging, and once you start this book you will be compelled to read it cover to cover in one sitting. ”

Still, I learned more about fluid dynamics, the physics of meteorology, the fishing industry. I'm glad I read it, but I'm not actually recommending it to anyone. ”

All ten jump in, one comes out with the ring. The trainer repeats this until there is only one person left. He is a Top-trained Navy SEAL. He just got selected out of the air-sea rescue training program. This is the true story of these amazing individuals, how they are trained, what they can do, and how they can fail in the face of the most frightening Seas imaginable.”

Yes | No“This book documents the fates of several people who had the misfortune to be at sea during the "perfect storm" -- a storm that became unexpectedly big and powerful due to the alignment of several weather systems. The primary story is the fate of the Andrea Gail, a fishing vessel that gets lost in the storm. Other stories of those who encountered the storm -- including a thrilling Coast Guard rescue -- are also chronicled. Junger does a good job of telling a true story in a novelistic way, and his description of what probably happened to the crew of the Andrea Gail is haunting. Like Alive described above, this book was made into a movie (this one starring George Clooney -- swoon)! ”

This movie had looked so interesting and I've always wanted to watch it, so I figured the book would be a good one. I was wrong. It's slow, it's plodding, there's no flow to it. Perhaps because of the subject matter, it's very technical, but ends up dissolving into jargon which takes away from the human element of the story. It's a shame because the human element seems like it would be the most important piece of the story, but it didn't seem that way at all. The book reads more like a textbook.
It also helped me to realize that while I prefer fiction books written by men, I prefer nonfiction ones written by women. ”
