- Sibling relationship: With many awful adult influences, the two siblings Gerald and Angel must relay on each other to survive both mentally and physically.
- Abuse: Drug abuse from a mother, emotional neglect from a mother, physical abuse from a step-father, and insinuated sexual abuse of a minor by her father (although the author is very good/tasteful about hiding explicit details of these encounters).
- Molestation: A very bad encounter where Jordan treats Angel in a sexual way against her own will.
