The book, Something Upstairs by Avi, is about a boy named Kenny who moves from California to Rhode Island with his family. When he arrives, he finds out that his new house is haunted. A ghost named Caleb is living in Kenny’s bedroom closet. Caleb is a black slave who was murdered in 1800. Caleb convinces Kenny to help him find his murderer by going into the past. Kenny finds Caleb’s murderer, Willinghast, who tries to get Kenny to shoot Caleb. Willinghast threatens Kenny by saying that he won’t be able to return to the present time unless he kills Caleb. Kenny likes Caleb and refuses to shoot him. Instead, Kenny shoots Willinghast and changes history. At the end of the book, Willinghast dies, Kenny goes back to the present, and Caleb disappeared from Kenny’s closet and was never seen since.
