one of two things: either things would continue going on as they have been for thousands of years with the few people who thought they knew how searching for the "fountain of youth" and most people just dismissing the idea

or two: people would focus more on finding the cure for death than their every day life and society as we know it would collapse... because people fear death

(it's also 4:30 in the morning and i'm procrastinating going to work... i'll get into more detail about what i mean in a later post)

    Haha, awesome answer.

Personally, i'm not sure if i would chose immortality if i had the chance. Of course i'm afraid of death, but i'm even more afraid of seeing what the world is going to one day become. If i got the choice i would like to stay young for 100 years and then start aging until my final end (if that makes any sense). This would allow me time to learn everything i can about the world and the people living in it without knowing the very far future. Yes, i understand you probably think that is a crazy wish, but it's just an opinion.

I wrote a short story a few years back that asks this same question.
There were definite consequences. You had to become sterile. Basically, if you weren't planning on leaving the world, you didn't get to bring anyone into the world.
My protaginist led a very lonely existence and opted for assisted suicide at the end of the story.

if it were to be that way then what is to say that the terror and destruction could meet unimaginable odds because of the industructablitly of the human race. and i think that people would not even understand what death could possibly be and this could have destructive consequences on the risks that people would take in their own lives.

Death is only a transition. We are all immortal. This wold is where we play a game called mortality. If we stopped playing the game "this world" would cease to exist.

    posted 6 years ago.
  • While I don't disagree with the sentiment, it seems a little egotistical to believe the world exists just for us. It would be just as easy to say everything would stop existing if cats or birds stopped playing "the game," and we are but their dreams and life lessons.

As for immortality itself--you notice as we become more crowded and our lives become longer, infertility rates are climbing as well? I think nature will take care of herself. I don't think I'd want to be immortal, but I would like a good many more years. A few thousand would be nice. :)

  • Michael L

It doesn't exist just for us, but our perception of it as the place where we act out our mortality is such a big part of our experience of it that it defines what we think of as "the world". A planet somewhere in space that was just like earth only without humans would be every bit a legitimate world, however its existence has no part in the human story and no bearing on the subject of mortality. The other aspects of our reality such as trees, rocks, animals and oceans do not differentiate individual life times from the greater whole they are a part of and so do not agonize over the idea of mortality. When we begin to identify with ourselves as a part of this greater whole, we can also drop this agonizing over mortality, but the world as we knew it has changed for us so much that it like a whole new world.

  • No one, because no one should be doomed to spend eternity alone, watching the people they love grow old and die around them. Which I know is a persnickety answer and not the vein you meant the question in at all, but still.... ;-]

That's the whole point of the book. I mean, the Tucks all pointed that out, that the world of eternal living is one no one should want to have, but if you MUST choose someone, who would it be? There's no one you would want to have the knowledge of eternity?

This question is like winning the lottery & then finding out there's no need for money anymore. To live eternally is a curse & not a treasure. Altho I like your answer, what would the poor mailman have to say about this dubious gift?

    posted 6 years ago.
  • loco_chica

    loco_chica

These are all good answers, but like DebRAWRS stated, i mean it more as a question of who would you chose to hold the knowledge and wisdom of the world. I really do understand that you wouldn't want to ever curse someone to live eternally, and i can guarantee that if i had the choice, i would never wish myself or anyone else to gain immortality within this section of our existence; i was just curious as to whom other people would chose, leaving out the whole idea of dooming them to the end of time. lol.

Probably someone, like a barber, or a mailman.
I mean, if you pick one famous person to live for an eternity, what's the fun in that?
So many rock stars hit thier peak because of their deaths, rulers rules until their time has come [sometimes, it's a good thing], and even regular people wouldn't be able to do it.
Someone who is dependable and passive, like my father's late barber for 20 years or the postman who likes to talk to little old ladies about how their plants are growing, is someone who people miss dearly, because they grew dependent on thier services. People like that are the people who should live forever. Someone that everyone knows by name, who's friendly and sweet, and is also non-threatening.

Good answer! I didn't know what to make of this question. Living forever just doesn't appeal to me at all so I wouldn't wish it on someone else.

The first movie is closer to the book I haven't seen it. The second movie I have seen and it and the book are different. I love the book because it talks about living life to its fullest, and the disney version isn't that bad its kind of good. There are a lot of life lessons like the one I said earlier live life to its fullest.

I REALLY LOVED THE BOOK! I think it was the first book i've read when i came to the U.S. it's cover actually attracted me. I personaly think that the book is better than the movie, and that is always the case with the book that you like. Books is a way of words, that stir up your imagination, and you see the characters in your head, and the scenery with your own imagination, and i think the movie ruins a lot of it.

For our next read aloud I want us to read "The Fire Within." I want us to read this book because this book has lots of mysteries to solve a long the way and the author is very good at starting chapters with very talented sentences. There is also how this book uses lots of diaologe in every chapter. Lastly, this author makes every chapter end with a strong ending.

Summary: This book is about a little girl named, Winnie, who ventures out into the woods. While in the woods she meets a seventeen year old boy, who is sitting by the spring. The spring holds a magical stop aging potion which Winnie knows nothing about. She wants a drink of water from the spring and cannot figure out why the boy, Jesse, does not want her to drink from the spring. Jesse's mother and older brother appears and the little girl is captured by the family. Winnie is kidnapped so that the family can explain why she cannot drink from the spring.
The family is followed by a stranger who has heard the whole story. The woods are the property of Winnie's family. He wants the woods in exchange for bringing Winnie back to her family. Jesse's mother, Mae, shoots the man and is taken to jail. Winnie is returned to her family. Mae escapes from jail with her family and Winnie's help. Almost eighty years later Mae and her husband return and find the tombstone where Winnie is buried. The reason Winnie escapes her fron yard boundary is because she wants a sense of freedom and independence. Her parents kept her sheltered from experiencing all life has to offer. In this story Winnie is ten years old.
Reflection: This is an easy read. I know students will relate to Winnie wanting a sense of independence from her parents. This story gives the reader a chance to see how the characters mentioned at the beginning connects to one another by the middle of the story. I enjoyed reading this fantasy novel.
Curriculum Use: Read aloud and have students write about connections made.

Summary: This story is about a family that has found the secret to quit aging. One of the family members falls in love with a woman who is still aging unlike all the people in his family. The story describes the love life between the two. The story also talks about the troubles they face in deciding whether she should drink the stuff that will keep her from aging.
Reason Chosen: I actually chose this book because I absolutely love the story that is written. It is so sweet and romantic and just a classic book. The book has a great storyline and does a great job of keeping the audience entertained.
Use in Classroom: I think this would be another book I would use as a read aloud. I believe it is one of those books that is perfect for the class to sit as a group and listen to the teacher read. The story has one of those stories that it is better being read aloud than silently read within a group.

I would say no because for one thing, she's too young to make a decision like that. Also, it's pretty obvious that the rest of the family thinks she shouldn't either for her sake; they obviously feel like their lives are going nowhere because they're already done everything they've wanted to and now there's nothing to look forward to, nothing to live for. And I think the strongest argument against it is that dying is a part of living. As Tuck says, life is supposed to be a cycle.

You could also make the argument that she's in love with him (true love and all that) and that true love means sacrificing everything for the person you love, and therefore she should drink from the pond.
