My book was The Ultra Marathon Man by Dean Karnazes. It was about a runner who ran all sorts of ultra marathons including a 199 mile race.
Dean Karnazes ran cross country events all across the United States. He started in Kindergarten running to and from school to save his parents from having to drive him, and he ran cross country and track and field in high school. However, due to a disagreement with his track coach he gave up running until years later when his sister died in a car crash. At first running was just a stress reliever, but then he started running marathons and 30 mile races. At this point it became more than just a hobby and he started training for things that many people can’t even imagine. That iis how his running career really began.
Running accomplishments that Dean Karnazes has is that he has ran 11 100 mile races in under 24 hours. He single handedly completed the 199 mile relay six times. He has run 148 miles in 24 hours. He ran 350 miles in 80 hours and 44 minutes without stopping, and he has won several marathons. Additionally he ran 50 marathons in 50 states in 50 days and on the 50th marathon he completed the New York Marathon. After this he decided to run home from New York to California, but stopped early in Missouri to spend more time with his family.
Karnazes ran for several reasons. He ran a lot for his daughter and other children who were born body functioning problems. For example his 350 run raised 10,000 dollars for a little girl with a congenital heart disorder who needed a transplant. Additionally he has raised money for the Leukemia society, Special Olympics, The Challenged Athlete foundation, etc.
This was a really interesting book and I would recommend it to all runners. I give this book 5 out of 5 stars because of how fascinating it was, I was amazed by everything that Dean could do and I also liked how he was running for charities the whole time. I really enjoyed this book and would recommend it to anybody.
