A psychological masterpiece. A psychopath lives in a small group of flats. He regularly goes to srangle a mannequin in the basement. Trouble starts when a man with a similar name moves into one of the flats and the mannequin vanishes. Rendell's best book, and the winner of the Gold Dagger Award from crime writers.

My absolute favorite of all the Ruth Rendell/Barbara Vine books I've read. Brilliantly plotted, and I do mean brilliantly. Plus, unlike in some of her books, where nearly every character is a fool or knave, one of the main characters in this novel is actually quite likeable.
