One of the best novels James has written. Philippa Palfrey, adopted from the age of eight, searches for her birth parents when she turns eighteen, and discovers that her mother is just due to be released from prison for the brutal murder of a young girl ten years earlier. Meanwhile, Norman Scase, the girl's surviving parent, is preparing to take vengeance on the woman who killed his daughter. As Phillipa begins to learn about her mother for the first time, Scase attempts to track her...
