“This was a really slow starter. Too slow, I almost gave up at 60 pages in. As it happens, I persevered for another 30 or so pages and eventually got hooked. It shouldn't take 100 pages to get into a novel. This is my first P.D. James book, so I don't know if this is normal for her style or not.
What kept me interested was the publishing industry in which the book is set. That's always fascinating. The story was okay. Perhaps a little too much foreshadowing of the ending, difficult to say. It felt like it was written for a TV drama. I prefer the action to follow the detectives around, but this was written as a series of scenes in which the reader picks up clues the detectives are unaware of.
So not really my style. An okay read, but I don't think I'll bother with any more of her work.”
