“This is the 7th Adam Dalgliesh mystery by P D James. She is a very descriptive author and develops her characters in the traditional English mould. These mysteries read as true literature rather than simple "who dunits." In the plot line is often not the central part of her books but rather, the development of characters and their psychologies ast he plot unfolds. Like The Black Tower and Death in Holy Orders this one also involves the death of a clergyman in unusual circumstances.”

A picture is worth more than thousand words in reverse - her power of description is immaculate, several pages just on the crime scene. There is the main plot and several sub-plots that lead you astray, but if you stay focused, there is a logical lead to the killer. This is my first PD James foray and introduction to Adam Dalgliesh's detective style. Her crime writing easily upstages Agatha Christie's formulaic episodes.”

The mystery is well-done but if I didn't read about 1/3 of it to start in one sitting, I might never have figured it out.”

James is simply ripping – a literary writer first and foremost, and a mystery writer only by genre. Her books are full of psychological depth, strong and believable characterization, a sobering gravitas, and unlike most mysteries, stand up under re-reading. And of course they’re corking good mysteries! Long live the Baroness J!”

There was an especially interesting thought discussed regarding how tolerance and anti-racism is like a religion.”
