Had a pretty slow start, but then about 1/3 in got really good. It was just a nice pure love story! Give it a try and stick with it past the beginning.

A wonderful love story from Laverle Spencer of Sister Regina (Jean), a Benedictine nun, who is torn between helping a family going through a terrible ordeal and her vows. Eddie Olzack, the school janitor, has just lost his wife, the beloved mother of Lucy and Anne, who are students in Sr. Regina's classes. The town has gathered together to give support to the family because Krystyna was well loved, but Holy Rule forbids Sr. Regina from acting as she'd like: she cannot hug those children, for instance. Her dissatisfactions with her vocation begin to war with her womanly feelings for both girls and their father, who eventually becomes more than "the janitor" to her.

The vignettes of life in a small Polish community (Browersville, MN) are wonderful, as is the feeling the reader gets as Sr. Regina tries to solve her conflicts, spiritual and emotional.

A bit sappy at times but a true vacation romance.

I barely discovered LaVyrle before she retired but have been enjoying her beautiful way with words and characters. She faces the serious problems of life and looks them in the face but also has such an optimistic faith in the goodness in people.

So sad Ms. Spencer is going into retirment, I will miss her sweet stories. However, for this being her last novel, I didn't feel the effort was as high as her earlier works, a bit of a disappointment.
