NO RELIABLE record comes down to us of the weather on that Friday morning in early August 1492 not long before dawn broke over the little pon village of Palos, a few miles up the River Tinto at the southwestern corner of Castile, on the edge of the peninsula giving Europe its farthest thrust into the expanse of water then known as the Ocean Sea.
