She writes of real people in not ideal situations, some of them with personality flaws that may not make you love them, but like them for who they are.

This book was readable. By the 3rd part, I kind of lost interest but since I was so close to the end, I decided to keep going. The part I enjoyed the most was Son's part. To me, that was the clearest narrative of the book. And it made me really dislike Rose. I just didn't understand her, and maybe we're not supposed to. The book was just left dangling in the end for me.

This is my second Patchett book and I found much of what I liked about the first: unusual curious characters and wonderful interior monologues. The unlikely plot did not trouble me. I was sufficiently believable and tension building to keep me interested.

I do like this book. There are a few other books that come to mind told from the vantage point of the various characters: Yellow Raft in Blue Water and During the Reign of the Queen of Persia. Check them out.

Patchett's writing seems effortless, I would agree.
