I really enjoyed Patron Saint of Liars, a great title for a book. I've always thought Patchett's work borders on melodrama...kind of the Grey's Anatomy of the literary world...but this story, although spanning nearly 20 years, has a comfortable inertia that reflected main character Rose's sense...

It was good, but Taft was better, and Run was best!

I really enjoyed Patron Saint of Liars, a great title for a book. I've always thought Patchett's work borders on melodrama...kind of the Grey's Anatomy of the literary world...but this story, although spanning nearly 20 years, has a comfortable inertia that reflected main character Rose's sense of comfort behind the wheel of her car. You want to turn the page and know these people... all of them, even the supporting characters.

Not quite as good as Bel Canto, but Patchett is always an interesting read.

I recently read Bel Canto by the same author. I liked this novel much better. The storyline is told by the three main characters. Rose, the mother, begins followed by Son whom she marries and ends with their daughter Cecelia. The story revolves around how Rose's relataionships with others including her mother, first husband and the people at St. Elizabeth's, a home for unwed mothers. Rose secretly labels herself as the Patron St. of Liars and rightfully so.

A married woman travels to a house for unwed mothers when she finds herself pregnant and realizes that she doesn't love her husband and doesn't want a baby. What she finds at the home is a family with the nuns and in order to stay she decides to marry the handyman and become the cook for the home. Riddled with secrets, The Patron Saint of Liars is told in three parts, and unravels the feelings and stories of all parties involved.

I loved the story and the characters. I wanted to just take Rose out of the book and shake her!!!! She was a frustrating character. Loved Son and Cecilia! Have to say I wanted the ending to be different, but...my ending would not have fit the book.

A very different kind of story. Heroine gets pregnant, goes to a home for unwed mothers, decides to keep the baby, marries the caretaker and never bonds with the child. I identified with her love of "driving". Very readable.

Ann Patchett is a good writer, but I didn't like this story.
