This book is as interesting as it is depressing. The theme of this book is that Europe has purposefully ignored the issue of Muslim immigration, which has led to a separate culture of Islam, which is becoming more and more virulent. Europeans don’t want to confront. They think that every disagreement can be solved through dialogue. So Muslims remain separate. They don’t learn the language of the country they live in and don’t support the idea of democracy or free speech. The stated goal of Islam as a whole and these Muslims in particular is to take over the world and have all of these European nations become subject states. Europeans are stupidly making way for this to happen. They are arrogant and refuse to confront the truth of their situation. The author is a gay man who thought that moving to Europe would afford him greater freedom of expression with his lifestyle. This helps to explain some of his anger and the slant he has towards liberal ideology and against Christianity. The truth of what he points out remains, regardless of his personal perspective.

It's a religion filled with hate and it carries on old outdated traditions that most of the world left behind in the dark ages. Europe is too dumb to deal with the problem just like they were in 1939 when Germany and the Nazi's were taking over. America is standing alone and standing strong.

This book was a real eye opener. See the evidence of what Islam is doing to Europe through the eyes a Liberal Gay American.

The United States is in for big trouble if they let what happened in Europe happen here. A truly frightening look at the future.

Bruce Bawer's While Europe Slept is a book that will raise your blood pressure. The book is filled with information that will not only horrify you but will infuriate you. One of the most interesting aspects of the book is that a self-identified liberal who is also a member of the gay community wrote it. The author, Bruce Bawer, left for Europe in the late nineties when he became disgusted with the United States and sought an experience that would better align with his views. He moved to Amsterdam, one of the most liberal cities in the world. What he found shocked him. The level of anti-Americanism were appalling. The Europeans love to hate Americans but they fail to realize the monster that they have created. The Muslim influx into Europe is not only crippling the economies of Europe but it is sharply dividing the culture and raising the crime and murder rates. Europeans hope that Muslims will integrate into their society but many are sending their children back to schools in the Middle East to ensure that they are brainwashed to hate Westerners and follow the teachings of the Koran. The accounts of honor killings, terrorism, and the depictions of simple blind hatred will make you revaluate your views on the world.

The book is well-written but occasionally can be a bit slow. It feels like a long editorial, which can, at times, be a struggle to get through. This is compensated for by the fact that the material and subject is intriguing and kept my interest. As someone who has been to Europe many times I know what the author is talking about and as an American it is a topic close to my heart. This is the best account of the world that I have read for years, if you read this book you will begin to grasp the gravity of the situation not only in the Middle East but also in Europe. Save your time with the Iraq Study Group Report or the 9/11 Report. Most of those facts and figures are available through more accessible, better written opinion editorials and other reports. Much of the information in While Europe Slept is seldom mentioned in the media and reading this book will save you time searching blogs and the occasional Associated Press article. It does not matter what your political beliefs are, but if you care about contemporary issues and are a well-informed American, you must read this book.

An important add to the continuing discussion on the intersection of Islam with the West -- and as a frequent traveler to Europe over the past 20 years, and having lived in Paris, the changes I perceive are striking. The changes Bawer notes in Amsterdam are very real -- and disturbing. It's not the same city in 2006 that I remember in 1980 - 1995. On my last visit in Dec. 2005 there was a palpable tension on the street amongst my Dutch friends and Western visitors and my gay friends who live there note how uncomfortable they have grown to feel for their safety while siimply walking the streets. Societies draw their strength through shared common values -- but fundamentalist Islamic values diverge so grotesquely from Westernized norms that how these two can co-exist becomes imcomprehensible. An intractable, growing problem . . . with no solution on the horizon.

I'm reading this right now. It's freaking me out and bursting some lofty idealistic opinions I had of European society.
