In The Age of Revolution, the first volume of his masterly four-volume aeuvre on the history of the modern world, the British Marxist historian Eric Hobsbawm sought the origins of this modern world in what he dubbed the "dual revolution": a transformation incarnated in the French Revolution of 1789 and "the contemporaneous (British) Industrial Revolution."
