Pretty much what the title says. More or less unbiased, we get a concise history of those troubled centuries in that whacked-out troubled land. Those Crusaders were complete dicks! And after Salahuddin kicked their sorry asses to Cyprus guess who comes to dinner? Hulugu Khan! Put the entire population of Baghdad to the sword: oh, about 80,000 or so. The Tigris ran red as if made of blood. Good read, but I recommend pairing it up with something light and easy; it's a guaranteed cure...

I bought this book in 1994 after a trip to Syria because I thought it would be really interesting to read what 12th- and 13th-centurieth Arab chroniclers made of the crusades. Unfortunately I read the preface too late, where the author (a Lebanese journalist writing in French and living in Paris) stated that this was not just another history book, but rather a 'truthful novel' about the crusades. This means that there is very little analysis, hardly any background, but just a succession of...
