“English title: Little Man – What Now?
The novel was published in 1932 and became an instant success. It paints a vivid picture of life in Germany during the Great Depression in the time of the Weimar Republic just before Hitler’s rise to power.
The story focuses on “the little man” Johannes Pinneberg and his wife Emma, whose pet name is “Lämmchen” (little lamb). They are a young couple trying to raise their family while struggling to survive the economic nightmare of unemployment and inflation in Berlin in the 1930s. After suffering many hardships, indignities, and failures, the one thing that prevails in the end is love. I read this a long time ago. It’s a memorable book.
