“A book that I just had to pick up as a new student teacher! His ideas are great and revolutionary though tend to get more dull as the book goes on. Only 100 pages, a very quick read. Even if you just pick it up to read a speech he gave called The Seven-Lesson Schoolteacher you will be FOREVER changed!”

He is originally from Monongahela near Pittsburgh. Marc got into this one, too, especially networks vs. communities. The 7 lessons of a public school education: confusion, class position, indifference, emotional dependency, intellectual dependency, provisional self-esteem and one can't hide. He suggests some form of free-market system. He believes in less school, not more. Networks (boo) vs. Community (rah).”

Gatto is a public school teacher who won several "Teacher of the Year" awards, so you don't have to be suspicious of his motives. The book is based on an acceptance speech he made, in which he spoke about what he really teaches in school.”

Changed my paradigm for understanding public school education -- even before I spent a day shadowing my son in high school.”
