"In 1893, tired of writing his Sherlock Holmes stories and eager to focus on historical novels, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle sent his famous detective to his death down the Reichenbach Fall in "The Final Problem". For years, the public clamored for the next installment in Holmes's tale and finally, nine years and several generous offers from his publishers later, Doyle was back to writing his Holmes stories.

Now, I'm a big fan of mysteries and an even bigger fan of Holmes - having finished this collection, I've now read about 65% of the canon. However, I've gotta say - I was disappointed. It was clear that Doyle's heart simply wasn't in these stories. The logic of Holmes isn't nearly so clear as in the earlier tales, usually relying on some important piece of information that has been withheld from the reader. Beyond that, the stories are much darker than those found in The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes. In those stories, the only people to die were generally on the wrong side of the law, and certainly didn't have the sympathy of the reader. In the tales recounted in this collection, however, at least one character we care about dies in each story. Perhaps this is to be expected - his readers stole Holmes's death from him, and as a result, he hits them upside the head with death in every story.

This is not to say that the book was entirely unenjoyable. There's still enough of the old Holmes left to satisfy, and I'm always happy to have decent short stories to read. Still, if you're looking to start the Holmes canon, this is not the place to do it."

    ***SPOILERS MAY BE BELOW***

This was the first Sherlock Holmes book I read. From reading this book I'd say you don't need to read the books in order, if there is any order, but I would advise to do so. This book starts by continuing where it left off with Dr Watson mourning for the loss of his beloved Sherlock Holmes after he fell into an abyss and died. I only know this because we had somone come in do talk about Sherlcock Holmes. I remember him saying "The truth is stranger than fiction' or something to that effect.

Doyle was greatly critisized heavily for killing off Sherlock Holmes. In fact, and I'm not sure if this is entirely factual, there was so much outrage that he decided bring him back from the dead.
We follow the story of the great Sherlock Holmes through the eyes of his partner in crime, or we should say partner in solving crime, Dr. Watson. This book contains many short stories, each one containing a case to be solved, and each one more intriguing and entertaining than the last.
Sherlock Holmes is a man of mystery. Each chapter you read you learn more about him but so much more is found to be unknown about him. One thing we know for certain is that he is the best detective mystery fiction has ever produced. He can solve a crime even when everyone thinks there can be no possible solution. He takes notice of the small seemingly inconsequential details that actually turn out to be the most valuable clues in solving the cases. And above all, he is a kind and generous character, one who sympathises greatly with others.
I must say that I enjoyed this book immensely and will certainly be picking up the other stories in the series in the near future.

Words cant express this man... verbs are few to define him... he picks up clues fom nothing and solves hundreds of cases (both civil and criminal). He is a genius in his areas of interest, but dont think of him as a super human. Yet, when he discloses his logic behind solving the case, the case turns crystal clear and even a baby would solve it! The man from Baker's Street, London is the most famous detective in the world. His methods are referred by even the Scotland Yard. Yet, he is a fictitious character, a character born out of the Beautiful mind of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. He is none other than Sherlock Holmes. Such was his fame that when ones the author had him die in a novel, there were huge unrest and protest. The public demanded the author to bring back Sherlock Holmes. The author gave back life to Holmes once again!!!

Very enjoyable. More meat to these stories than some of the earlier ones.
