Four Seasons in the life of new parents under truly extraordinary circumstances. They have just welcomed twin boys and a mere hours later Anthony receives news that he has just been awarded a fellowship from the American Academy of Arts and Letters in Rome. And so this young family packs up house and move from their Iowa home to Rome. This book is without a doubt for parents, but it is also a love letter to Rome and for those of us who love live for the wanderlust of feeling anonymous in a new city.

Anthony does a spot on job of painting the everyday life of Romans - a gorgeous read!

I like Anthony Doerr, the author for this book. His other 2 books are The Shell Collector & About Grace

I enjoyed "seeing" Rome through Anthony Doerr's eyes, especially because he is an author and his perception, the things he notices, are things, people and places that i feel I would notice too. The fact that he was a new father, when he experienced Rome, kicked it up a few notches too. I enjoyed the insights into suddenly embracing the enormous responsibility which children bring into a parent's life. I also enjoyed the discovery of Rome, read against the words of Pliny. This was an enjoyable book.

Wonderful! I learned so much about Italy. Funny, poignant and it made me look up Pliny.

Had a wonderful time being in Rome via this book. I related so well being a Mother of twins myself and a lover of Italy. (sigh) Can't wait to go back! With the kiddos!

I love reading anything having to do with Italy, but this book just didn't do it for me. And I don't know why, is it because I have nothing in common with a married father of young twins living in Italy for a year? Or because I didn't feel he 'loved' living in Rome for a year as much as I would have? Or maybe because I never really got an impression of his wife. Perhaps it was just not personal enough of a memoir, for me anyway.

This was a very readable, poetic piece of memoir/travel dialogue. The descriptions of Doerr and his wife coping with new twins in a foreign country, and the feelings he has about being a father are touching and insightful. I loved the references to Pliny and the other authors. The descriptions of Rome and the philosophical thoughts were superb and provocative. He wrote about the various churches, fountains, the Vatican with descriptives that brought the city to light. His relating of the Italians and the language and the difference in culture were colorful and honest. I highly recommend this as a simple and yet very complex narrative of a beautiful experience.
