You see what's coming just from the jacket blurb. No need to read ~200 pages of rather dense prose. Nothing in the book that would make for any (major) mis-direction - what's there is obvious as to what it is.

Readable if you have nothing better to do

I love Brother Cadfael's humanity, his wisdom, and his humor.

The Cadfael books are a great peek into the medieval world around Shrewsburg, England. There are at least sixteen in this series and a very good DVD series based on them (with Derek Jacobi).

This series has everything - and for fans of historical fiction, little else comes close.

I read it for a book club selection for church. As with all books that have foreign names I would they would do a list of pronunciations. Other than that I like it.

I loved this book. The ending was especially good, and much better than the Derek Jacobi television series ending.

Hi, cheating here a bit - I've read all the Cadfael books I think, so this review is a general one to cover tham all. I LOVE them, medieval, mystery, murder....what's not to like. The setting is the Civil war between Stephen and Matilda when, according to conrtemporary sources 'God and his angels slept'. Cadfael has been a soldier in his younger days but has now become a herbalist at Shrewsbury Abbey. He is called upon by the locals whenever tere is illness to help with his healing remedies, and from this there often comes a mystery. Ellis Peters also writes as Edith Pargeter, under which name she wrote 'The Heaven Tree' trilogy about medieval cathedral buildng - another highly recommended read.

It was a slow start, but picked up about half way through. Lots of insight on day to day living in medieval England and Wales. This is the first book of the series and I would read more of Ellis Peters's books. The series was made into a series that has been shown on PBS. Worth watching.
