Since this novel has sold over 25 million copies since it was published in 1914, I wanted to find out why it was so popular by reading too.

The first thing that I noticed was that even though the N-word never appears in the novel, it is ten times more racist than many books of its...

It's almost obligatory to read this classic about the boy raised by apes. This is one of the first novels to reveal an ecological awareness, and to suggest that modern man may not be an improvement. To be fair, Burroughs is not kind towards primitive tribes either.

Though Tarzan is an iconic character, this book is too steeped in that era's ideas of Social Darwinism with lots of racist/sexist caricatures that's rather difficult to enjoy.

Never knew that Tarzan was a lot more articulate than Hollywood gave him credit for. Loved the book.

I can't say why I picked up Tarzan at my local library. Something was nagging at the back of my brain, telling me to read a classic for once. I think that's why I picked it up. I'm glad that I did.

What a great read. Pick it up sometime and check it out. I think you'll be surprised too.
