A truly first rate exposition of byznatine history for the non-specialist. A much needed antidote to Gibbon's view of the Eastern empire that has prervaded Western thought for the last couple of centuries. It does not idolize the Byzantines but portays them in a fully human portrait rather than the demonized view that has come down to us from most Western historians.
