The book is a million times better than the current movie. The two share little more than title and name of main character.

First book I read after watching the film in which I was NOT disappointed in one or the other. I feel both the book and the film are entirely different in which case it doesn’t much matter if you view or read it first. Both are sure to thrill you fully gripping you in its plot. Certainly a must read for any end of humanity aficionados and a great book to get those unenthusiastic of the undead addicted.
    FYI
The book also includes additional literary work by Richard Matheson you are sure to enjoy.

The book is very different from the movie and even though I really liked the movie I am not sure I think it is right to change a classic book that much. Overall I really liked the book. It asks some very interesting questions and in parts the writing is really beautifull.

The book was interesting, but not what I was expecting. "I am Legend" only actually took up the first half of the book. While the story was unique and enjoyable, it was very short, very light, and not nearly as developed as I'd hoped. I would consider it more of a short story than a novel. The second half of the book was filled with shorter stories and what seemed to be excerpts from books that were never written. It was as if they grabbed whatever filler they could find to pad the book so it didn't look so tiny. Disappointing, overall.

One of my favorites of the genre. For a book that was written (I think) in the 50's, about the future (the 70's) it is pretty relevant. I can't say enough good things about this book.

This book was great. I had no idea I could enjoy a vampire book this much! Really explores an isolated man.

I Am Legend with Will Smith was about ready to come out in the movie theaters. So my friend Charlie was asking me if I had read it, and eventually (the book is short, 150 pages) cajoled me into reading it. When I went to my list it turns out that I had previously read it in 1986. Any familiarity I had with the plot I attributed to having seen some or most of The Omega Man.

It ticked me off because I didn't really enjoy the book, and I knew from having watched the movie how it was going to end. Since the book is in my collection, I want to have read it, but I don't need to have read it twice.

It must have some redeeming quality, they made it into a movie and then made it again. The main is Robert Neville, the rest of the people in the world have been infected with a virus that turns them into vampires. During the day, depending on his mood he fortifies his house, kills any vampires that he runs across, and gathers supplies. At other times he is depressed and does nothing. If that was it, it would be a pretty trivial story. Matheson adds plot elements his search for another unaffected person. He first finds a dog that seems to be normal. Later on he meets a woman who appears to be normal. By this time he has started doing lab work, looking at blood samples and has identified the virus. Found that there are dead vampires, where the human functions have ceased and the body is being animated by the virus, and living vampires, where the heart is still beating, etc.

Before he can test the woman's blood, to see if she is infected or not, she conks him on the head and starts to run away. She can't leave because the "dead" vampires surrounding Neville's house would kill her. She kind of explains to him that living vampires have come to grips with the virus and are in some sort of steady state where they are infected but they aren't turning dead. The next day she leaves.

Months (or years?) later, a band of this new group comes by kills all of the dead vampires around Neville's house. They then attack his house capture him, take him to their compound to execute him/let him die. Right before he is about to die he has an epiphany that to this new group of vampires that he's the monster, the thing that comes around in their sleep and kills them. I don't care, I'm still rooting for him to get away and kill all the vampires.
