As always, clarke is excellent. But here the story is depending more on intrigues than scientific marvels. Moreover, the abrupt finish makes one look for the sequel. Excellent, but by Clarke's standard, not among the very best.

Wonderful concept sci-fi novel. A big monolith shows up in earth orbit. What's inside? A vast hollow tube of glittering empty cities. Or are they empty...?

    My Favorite lines:
Destiny is more important than love of nay kind.
You can endure anything if you are certain of your destiny.

Each of us is the sum of all we have ever experienced. Only the very young have a clean state. The rest of us must live forever with everything we have ever been.

Just being alive is not important thing. Life must have quality to be worthwhile. And to have quality we must be willing to take a few risks. [pp.350]

    Intuition or mathematics?
Do we use models to help us find the truth? or do we know the truth first and then develop the mathematics to explain it? [pp.353]

I have thought of thousands of things to tell you during these hours I have been waiting. But I can't remember most of them. [pp.368]

There was no way, after fifteen minutes of thinking about Mr. Einstein that suicide was still a viable option. [pp.373]

He longed for a distraction, something that would make him forget his responsibilities and allow his soul some response. [pp.397]

The whole Rama Series is an amazing work of Science Fiction... The entire story is so thrilling that you just cannot afford to put the book down... Once you finish one book, you will want to immediately get the next book and start reading it... The descriptions of the "Aliens" is so fantastic that you will feel transported to the world of Rama... It is a must read for Science Fiction lovers...
