Didn’t Like It“I've never read anything by Clarke before, although I've seen the "2001" movies, of course. I found this to be very sketchy and never fully realized, kind of bare bones. It also was pretty boring, a huge downfall of a lot of science fiction. I'm sure he has alot of great books, but I don't think...” see full review » see other reviews » |
“It's entertaining and easy to breeze through. Like a lot of ACC's work, it's the ideas that count and this one lends to quite a bit of thinking, even when you're done with it.”

It has some good elements regarding the future of humanity and what happens when people from a technologically advanced society meets a more laid-back and less tech-advanced society, but the ideas are not expanded very much and that's a shame. However, this is by far one of the better books of Clarke's when looking at characterization. Compared to other characters in Clarke books, the one's in Songs of Distant Earth are downright three-dimensional and interesting. All in all, it's a good read if you just need something to pass the time, but it's not particularly thought challenging.”

And I admit, I was turned off by the author's note at the beginning of the book which pretty much said that everybody else claiming to write science fiction is really writing fantasy, and he's the only one who writes real science fiction. Get over yourself, already. Bah.”

Great characters and science await the reader of this book.”
