Liked It“Clarke came back from 2061 in my opinion with the fourth book of the trilogy, 3001. This book definitely had me feeling those suspenseful moments and the urgency necessary to keep me engrossed. Going from the outer limits of the Solar System to Earth (well, very close to it), back to Jupiter,...” see full review » see other reviews » |
Didn’t Like It“I really liked this book up until the end. I don't want to spoil it, but it had a similar ending in concept to a 90's movie involving a Mac and a mothership, and a lot of stuff blowing up before that. I loved the mystery and fascination that the 2001 series had, but I didn't like the...” see full review » see other reviews » |
“I've read this but I may have been too young to really appreciate - or maybe I should start with the earlier novels (2001 Space Oddysey) first!”

This book definitely had me feeling those suspenseful moments and the urgency necessary to keep me engrossed. Going from the outer limits of the Solar System to Earth (well, very close to it), back to Jupiter, etc., the plot keeps rolling. Bowman's revelation of the nature of the TMAs was monumental, as was Clarke's one-paragraph epilogue. What makes this one of my favorites is after the novel, Clarke gives notes on current technology -- where did he get his wonderful ideas, is science catching up to his visions, etc -- showing developments that are inching the real human race closer to that in 3001.”

Yes | No“ Awakened 1000 years in the future, Frank Poole rubs his eyes open to find himself in an exciting and surprising future. Arthur C. Clarke sets 3001: The Final Odyssey to bed with an epic finale of words. Arthur C. Clarke as a sci-fi god has written over 70 books all non-fiction and fiction, the Odyssey series being science fiction.
Frank Poole lives his life in Africa Tower, an enormous structure towering miles above Africa. When he firsts awakes, Indra Wallace guides him through his troubles in this new world, and becomes very close to him spending so much time aiding him. One such addition to common knowledge was the braincap, it was a new way of thinking and living, offering various new abilities that you could of not done before. Poole learns that after HAL 9000, a supercomputer, goes hostile, he was launched into the depths of space. Later being reawakened to the year 3001, leaving him weak and extremely lost in the society of 3001. The monolith, occupying David Bowman and HAL 9000, appears once again, but once again forever. The Earth and the populated planets in the solar system have something in store for this godly tool of creation and destruction.
Where do I begin, this book was amazing. It had a great storyline and kept me eager to pull the book out of my backpack. Arthur C. Clarke's sci-fi writing skills are astounding, and keep me hungry for another book of his. In the book 2001:A Space Odyssey, the beginning of this series, he did a great job of describing and helping the reader picture what's happening in the book. Clarke could have done a better job at finishing the series, but I thought it was a great ending, it left me dying for more although it was the final book. "Their little universe is very young, and its god is still a child. But it is too soon to judge them; when We return in the Last Days, We will consider what we should have saved." In this quote of 3001: The Final Odyssey, it leaves me eager to find out what will happen next. Who is "We" and what are the "Last Days"?

“Considering the disaster that was 'Odyssey Three' (see my review of '2061' for further details), '3001' was surprisingly wonderful. The story is incredibly thought-provoking and eerily possible, especially given our current state of technology. Not ALL of the questions are answered in '3001,' but it provides a solid and satisfying conclusion to the 'Odyssey' series.”

Yes, a LOT of science fiction is preachy, but it doesn't have to be in your face about it. And the fact that I agreed with much of what he was preaching about didn't help. It was still annoying.”
