I loved this book on so many levels. It is a book which takes a number of genres and undermines them. Fun!!
The story is your basic Alice in Wonderland plot. A naive and likeable character goes on a quest and in the process has many adventures and meets a series of eccentric and unlikely characters. The quest is set in contemporary Tokyo.
The book consistently sets up a magic realism discourse but then discounts it as a dream or a story. It has mangaesque descriptions of yakuza and...

    hmm. this book is mitchell's only competition for cloud atlas, in my opinion. yes, it's very murakami (i'm glad lots of people think that--i thought it was only me) but that's part of it's charm.
