Yes | No“The Curse of the Pharaohs is a fast, fun, and humorous second outing with Amelia and her husband Emerson. The first half isn't quite as good as the second, but it quickly picks up and is enjoyable until the end. Amelia's outlook is a joy to read and I love how Elizabeth Peters writes her, which to me, seems like it would be very hard to do in a first person narrative (particularly with a character like Amelia Peabody Emerson!). There are some truly hilarious lines and passages, especially between Amelia and Emerson.
One line I just have to keep for prosperity: "It is impossible for any rational mind to follow the peculiar mental convolutions that pass for logic among the male sex."
That is the genius of Ms. Peters writing and I look forward to the rest of the series.”
“The second book in the Amelia Peabody series is just as great as the first book!
The funny, clever repartee between Amelia and Emerson which makes this series fantastic continues unabated. In this book the addition of son Ramses adds a new element. Ramses is, as you would expect in the offspring of Emerson and Peabody, unusual to say the least. The scene in which Amelia and Emerson return from a year in Egypt and see their baby for the first time is an absolute scream! I howled with laughter, and that is just the beginning.
The Emersons head off back to Egypt to continue the excavation of a tomb which has been interrupted by the untimely death of a friend, which both Amelia and Emerson believe is murder. They decide to investigate while also continuing the excavation.
As always, there is a myriad of characters, all of whom have secrets, lies and reasons to be less than straightforward, none of which deters Amelia from determining the truth.
The sparring of Emerson and Amelia is a key element of the book, and the incredibly clever lightening fast interactions between them is unique and wonderful. ”
“This is the fun second installment of the Amelia Peabody series. Peabody & Emerson return to Egypt for the first time since the birth of their son Ramsey. They are in Egypt to continue an excavation after the murder of an old friend. Intrigue and superstitions abound as the Emersions’ battle the curse of the pharaoh and murders to find the treasures centuries old.
”
“Emerson and Amelia are as unstoppable as ever, but they seemd to have met their match in their precocious son Ramses. With the usual flare for mystery and thrills, the book also has gems of "wisdom" in the form of Amelia's take on marriage, husbands and men in general.”
