An absorbing summer read, with all shades of human emotion and green trees. Explains the white settling of the Pacific Northwest in graphic, even sociopathic, terms.

First, Annie Dillard is a better essayist than novelist. But this is a big, ambitious story. The Pacific Northwest setting appealed to me, of course, as did the historical context of the earliest loggers in our NW woods. The book is a little slow to develop but overall, I'd say it is worth a patient read.

I stumbled on this over the summer. It's a historical fictional piece that tells the tale of several people who settled the Pacific Northwest territry of the US. I wasn't sure if I would stick with it but it was a great book full of real life tradegy and happiness!
