Hollywood. The glamour, the glitter, the stars. Who wouldn’t want to live in a sea side mansion and have the whole world adore them? Who wouldn’t want a bottomless bank account? To many, being on the Hollywood A-list seems like the crème-de-la-crème of a perfect lifestyle. But all that glitters is not gold, and all that shines does not hold value. Sidney Sheldon’s A Stranger in the Mirror shows a stark reality of what can become of the “icons” many American’s worship.
An interesting writing tool the author uses in this story is point of view. The storyline alternates between the life of Toby Temple, a poor Detroit born boy and Jill Castle a likewise poor girl from Odessa, Texas. By changing the story line, the author really has the reader reading two totally separate stories, until the two eventually become one in an interesting series of events. Both of the characters share many of the same traits. Both have little wealth to begin with, and both have special attributes for their situations. Toby is very funny and good at parodies. Jill is strikingly beautiful. Over time they both make it to Hollywood, where there lives intertwine, and crash and burn together.
This novel is very interesting. The way the author describes Toby’s rise to becoming a major comedian is very believable. It almost seems like he’s writing from first hand experience. Likewise the author shows the reader very bluntly how horrible and cruel the town of Hollywood can really be, and what it takes to survive there. However, some of the events in the book are hard to believe. At one point Toby is nursed back from a stroke that the doctor’s assured him would, “paralyze him for life”. This is done by only Jill without any medical assistance. Miraculously Toby can later walk and talk perfectly fine. Scenes like this have the reader questioning the story’s authenticity.
I enjoy the writing of Sheldon and this novel was no exception. Although not his best, it still was a very interesting and well written piece. Also, this book was written in 1976, but it could still be true about Hollywood now, or in another 50 years. I learned that one that has fame and wealth is infinitely poorer then one who has friends and honesty. This book does have some inappropriate parts so I wouldn’t recommend it as a school read, but if anyone enjoys a good life story novel or an out of the box read, this book is certainly worth the time.
