  “Ensaio sobre a cegueira é um dos melhores livros do escritor português José Saramago e um dos maiores da literatura universal contemporânea, pelo menos para mim. Li há cerca de seis ou sete anos, bem antes da celeuma em torno do filme, que também é uma boa adaptação, comoveu até o próprio autor da história. Ensaio sobre a cegueira é uma crônica pungente, dolorida em diversas passagens, mas de um humanismo impressionante. O livro conta a história de uma epidemia de cegueira branca que domina todo um país. Dia após dia, a cegueira vai se espalhando pela população. O governo toma medidas drásticas para confinar os infectados (em muitos trechos lembra Foucault e sua história da loucura). O ser humano, confinado e reduzido ao seu estado animal, demonstra toda a barbárie de que é capaz. Uma lição e tanto, que pode ser aplicada a diversos fatores da vida contemporânea.”

  “I managed to read it before the movie, and I got to say that this is a very STRONG book. If you're used to read romantic novels or something light, this is not the book for you.
  The first pages are repetitive but when the action starts kicking in, you can't stop devouring every word - actually, Saramago's own style allows this, since punctuation is not very used, leaving you with massive paragraphs.
  The ending is almost magical, and it remind us that we should not forget the beauty of the world and the need of humanity.”
