Maybe it's because I lived on a live volcano for five years that I found this so interesting, but it's a good historical novel. I learned a lot about the Roman culture of the times, volcanoes, aqueducts, Pompeii, and more. And there's even a love story to boot!

For those of us who don't fancy reading heavy historical tomes, this is a fantastic way to explore what it must have been like to experience the eruption of Vesuvius, with great detail of the excesses, intrigues and social mores of everday Roman life. Robert Harris is a brilliant writer and all his characters are rounded and believable. This book even made me interested in the building and maintenance of Roman viaducts!

A fascinating perspective on the destruction of Pompeii, following the trail of sulphurous fumes with a diligent water engineer.

Excellent! I've been to Pompeii, but had I read this before I went it would have held much more meaning...I suppose I would have had a better idea of what I was looking at, and how it might have felt to be there when Vesuvius blew its top. I guess I'll just have to go again!

historical fiction, mature content, (advance reader's ed.); I had trouble putting this one down. It's very well-written, from the perspective of a young aquarius. The story covers two days, prior to and including the eruption of Vesuvius, which completely wiped out Pompeii. It effortlessly covers the many layers of life in any city - corruption, social structure and status, etc. while unraveling what makes the cities of ancient Rome unique, all while telling the geological story of a volcano and making it absolutely fascinating.
