I learned a lot about the Roman culture of the times, volcanoes, aqueducts, Pompeii, and more. And there's even a love story to boot!” see full review » see other reviews » |

Robert Harris is a brilliant writer and all his characters are rounded and believable. This book even made me interested in the building and maintenance of Roman viaducts!”

I've been to Pompeii, but had I read this before I went it would have held much more meaning...I suppose I would have had a better idea of what I was looking at, and how it might have felt to be there when Vesuvius blew its top. I guess I'll just have to go again! ”

Bovendien wordt er ondertussen veel verteld over het leven van de Romeinen, de hiĆ«rarchie, de bureaucratie, de slaven, hoe het dagelijks leven eruit zag. Interessant, spannend, en geen moment vervelend.”

The story covers two days, prior to and including the eruption of Vesuvius, which completely wiped out Pompeii. It effortlessly covers the many layers of life in any city - corruption, social structure and status, etc. while unraveling what makes the cities of ancient Rome unique, all while telling the geological story of a volcano and making it absolutely fascinating.”
