• Josef Stalin: Stalin was the leader of the Soviet Union from 1922 until 1952, and is arguably the most famous USSR leader. Born in Georgia, Josef Stalin was christened Josef Vissarionovich Dzhugashvili. Stalin is widely considered to be responsible for the deaths of millions of people in Soviet countries during his 'Red Terror', the 'Five Year Plan', the Second World War, and Ukrainian Holodomor, Stalin is widely considered a tyrant in the western world. Josef Stalin is a significant character in Archangel, as the plot revolves around the attempt to find a notebook he owned during his life.

• Pravda: 'Pravda', or 'Truth' in English, was the official newspaper of the Soviet Union. It acted as the main organ for distributing news from the Party itself, and existed from 1912 until 1991. Significantly, the paper pre-dates the formation of the Soviet Union by twelve years, and was occasionally contributed to by Josef Stalin, under a number of different aliases and pen-names.
