Atwood makes me uncomfortable, because I always find myself relating too much to the characters - or if not to the characters at least what they're feeling. I can understand the motivation to almost everything that Marian did and felt. And given when this book was written, I was surprised it didn't come off as dated - all the social psychologists in the world would likely be shocked to discover that the "quarter age" crisis they so aptly ascribed to my generation a few years ago, is summarized nicely in a book from the late 60s - the feeling of being out of school and trapped in the first job - the feeling of not quite knowing what you want from yourself or your relationships with others. Being grown up and not quite ready to face it. While this doesn't quite reach the level of Cat's Eye (my favorite), it's a close second. It's relevant, relateable, disturbing, and uses language beautifully. I have a few issues with how heavy-handed she gets in the Fruedian symbolism as it pertains to parents and childhood trauma, but Atwood was self-aware enough to make fun of that to an extent in her characatures of grad students to tried to find a deeper meaning when there wasn't one.

This is actually one of my favourite Margaret Atwood books. It's an older book but is strong in its message. It reminds us to be who we are- true to ourself. In her exquisite literary style she creates a superb story with an strong underlying feminist message. Atwood is not for everyone, but if you like her work I can't image how you couldn't enjoy this one.
