The end was quite a letdown...

Hated the fact that I have the "movie-edition" cover because the book and the re-done movie are not the same. I thought this was a good read if for no other reason than to read the book that introduced the term "stepford wives" into our vocabulary.

Short and precise in fact it grips you in certain places but then it becomes loose and quite frankly a bit lacking in explanations about why what is happening the way it is! Suprisingly this is one of those stories whose movie is better than the book!

Smarter people than me have written about the structure, precision and pacing of this thriller.

What fascinates me is the skillful use of the trope of the heroine becoming wise to the cabal/conspiracy/truth and being perceived as paranoid.

Count up the works that have employed this. I'll be it's a lot. But how often has it been used as adeptly as by Ira Levin in "The Stepford Wives"? I'll say not often.

This book is light reading. However, once you grasp the idea and the possibility of it...it's chilling. But I think, the way men "control" women in this novel would never become a reality. In this novel, women are powerless against the twisted philosophy of the men. In fact, I was so disheartened when the main character didn't escape the harsh fate of women in Stepford. (I was hoping with all my heart that she would, when I was nearing the ending, yet was half-afraid she wouldn't.) The woman issue Levin tackled in the novel has many symbolisms. It could be the the woman's acceptance of being dominated because for her, it's the way things are, or because she doesn't do anything to remedy the situation. In whatever way, this book is worth reading. Men out there, would you really go to such extreme length? :p

I neither liked nor disliked this book. For me, the story was rather rushed, and oddly, I was able to predict how the end would be written. Maybe that's why it didn't really interest me enough to watch the movie. Still, it had some great, albeit short moments of suspense.

Much better than the movie. I like Nicole Kidman but the movie was way too campy to truly resemble the book.
