This was a really good book, but the final part really lost momentum.

POISONWOOD BIBLE (for some reason, the site shows the Spanish titile) IS ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS I HAVE EVER READ! But fair warning - by the end of it, I felt like I'd been bitten by snakes, giant ants, suffered malaria, etc. That's how REAL this book seemed. Kingsolvers' style and character development really enhances the whole story. Beautifully executed.

This book was okay, not great. Its the story of 4 girls, just barely surviving in the Congo on their father's missionary zeal. The story is told by the 4 different girls and we get to see different points of view on the similar situations. In the beginning, Leah feels faithful to her father and Christianity as she plans to take a religious career for the future. Rachel, the oldest, appears to be self-centered and egotistical girl, only being concerned in her appearances. Adah, the most unique of the sisters, suffers from a disease making the left side of her brain dead. Regardless, she seems like the most sarcastic and cynical daughter out of the 4. Being the outcast, she is the only sister that of now sees her father for the vile man he is. Ruth May, the youngest of the family, has confused beliefs about the Congolese people and Christianity.

I read this book two winters ago. It sticks with me. I'd like to read it again. I plan to read it again. But then I remember how much work it was. This is the book that caused me to agree to read ANYTHING Barbara Kingsolver writes. Aside from the fact that it is a fascinating, unique, thought provoking story, Kingsolver managed to teach a history lesson. Her story spans several decades and unlike most novels of this sort, it never gets weak. The ending is unhurried. Just read it.

It takes time to get into the story, and it is somewhat repetitive but over all it's a good book to read.

it tells the story of cultural imperialism,of a one man artificially injecting his own culture and religion into another nation like an imperial poison and how his absurd mission has created more problems than it could ever "solve".
A story of the white man's burden ,the eternal temptation to save the world and the never-ending failure .
