Sam (Samantha) Kingston is part of a group of four friends in their senior year of high school. They are the most popular girls in the school. This group practically defines the term "mean girls", by their attitudes, remarks and actions. And the last day of Sam's life is a Friday that is somewhat typical for her as she attends some classes and skips others and attends a party in the evening. That is, it's typical until the end of the day .... when she dies. Or does she? The next morning Sam wakes up in her own bed, and it's Friday again. She relives the same day, seven times.
This book could be hokey. It could be the Young Adult version of Groundhog Day. But it's not. It is, as demonstrated by one of the key tags for the book, very DEEP. Every day Sam learns a little bit more, and I found myself liking her more. Being on the opposite side of the popular girls in high school myself, I was not disposed to like Sam. But I came to realize, just as Sam did, that it's not black and white. I found myself rooting for Sam, and hoping that when she came out of this loop she would find her happy ending - one way or another.”
