I just finished this book and must say that I was not impressed. I had to force my self to finish it.....I mistakenly assumed it would get better. I am rather shocked that this won the National Book Award.

This is a fantastic book that delves deep into the minds of several people. It's fascinating to learn how the brain works in this novel, which uses down to earth terms so that even I can figure it out. It's so interesting to see how relationships can change. It also brought me to the revelation that it is strange that even as our appearances stay the same, our personalities change, yet the brain still recognizes the other person.

It's disappointing. Very clinical and I was expecting more of a mystery type story line.

Haunting, melancholy exploration of brain function, memory, identify, and perception of self. And cranes.

The group's opinions were also divided on this book. Some of us loved it while others hated it! The discussion was held during our holiday party, so I didn't hear what everyone thought. My table, except for one, found the book to be vague and the main character irritating, but I believe the other table had almost the complete opposite response.
    Pros: interesting premise
    Cons: main character unbelievable

This is a wonderful story, part mystery, part just plain beautifully written prose. It is told from the differing perspectives of the characters, including a man in a coma (fascinating!) and a flock of birds (also fascinating!).

Horrid. Whaaaa? This book won awards? It was so terrible. I took this to the beach, too. This is about a guy who crashes and results in a brain injury, but the stuff about the birds who witnessed the crash that night...witnessed foul-play ? We never really find out. Only the birds who were there saw what happened. Ugh. Don't toy with your readers Richard Powers. Way too much drivel and blather about birds and their mysterious ways, and not enough concise narration, clever dialogue, or a satisfying resolution. Three weeks of my life that I will never get back.
